From Access Database to Modern Web App: in Under 270 Hours

A traditional rebuild of an MS Access frontend that had grown over years was estimated at more than 2,500 hours: single-workstation, not mobile, and at risk with every Office update. Using vibe coding, consistently AI-assisted development in the Cursor IDE, we turned it into a modern, browser-based web app in under 270 working hours: same feature set, multi-user, available on any device.

Starting point

As in many mid-sized companies, the central business application had grown in MS Access over the years: order entry, reporting and master data maintenance ran through forms and VBA macros: reliable, but only at a single workstation. Home office, mobile use or several colleagues working in parallel were impossible, and every Office update carried the risk of bringing the application down.

MS Access frontend: form and table view, lettering made unreadable
Before: the legacy Access frontend: functional, but single-workstation and not mobile-ready.

Approach

A traditional redevelopment had already been evaluated and failed on time and budget. The requirements for us were therefore clearly defined: the complete feature set must be preserved, ongoing operations must not be interrupted and the effort must be planned reliably before the project starts.

Instead of reprogramming the application by hand, we set up the migration process to be consistently AI-assisted, an approach we call vibe coding. The Cursor IDE translates the data model, forms and VBA logic into a modern web codebase, while our developers direct, review and refine every result. Exactly this combination of software development and AI agents & workflows cut the effort from the more than 2,500 hours originally estimated down to under 270 hours.

1
Analysis & data model Hrs 1 to 40
Review of the Access database: table structure, forms, queries and VBA logic are captured and documented as a migration plan.
2
AI-assisted code translation Hrs 41 to 190
Using the Cursor IDE, the business logic is translated into a modern web application with a clean database connection: form by form, rule by rule.
3
Review, testing & refinement Hrs 191 to 250
Our developers verify every function against the original, test with real data and fine-tune usability and layout.
4
Go-live & handover Hrs 251 to 270
Deployment on the target system, data migration and team onboarding: the web app replaces the Access frontend without interrupting operations.
Web app in the browser: form view with tabs, lettering made unreadable
After: the web app in the browser: the same forms and workflows, now multi-user ready.

Result

After less than 270 working hours, instead of the more than 2,500 hours originally estimated, the new web app was live in production. All functions of the Access application remain available: now multi-user, mobile and independent of local Office installations:

  • Several employees work simultaneously without locking conflicts, in the office, at home and on the road.
  • No more dependency on Office versions and local installations; updates are rolled out centrally.
  • Role-based access and a central database create the foundation for clean reporting and further digitalisation steps.
We had budgeted for more than 2,500 hours: the project was delivered in under 270 hours. For the team, the switch was barely noticeable, just suddenly available everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How was an Access migration estimated at more than 2,500 hours delivered in under 270 hours?
Through vibe coding: consistently AI-assisted development: the existing Access structure (tables, forms, VBA logic) is analysed and translated into a modern web codebase using tools such as the Cursor IDE. Experienced developers review, test and refine every result. The web app was delivered in under 270 hours instead of the more than 2,500 hours estimated for a traditional rebuild.
Is the full feature set of the Access application preserved?
Yes. The goal of the migration is feature parity: all forms, reports and business rules of the Access application are reproduced in the web app: enhanced with benefits such as multi-user operation, mobile access and role-based permissions.
What does migrating from Access to a web app cost?
Consistent use of AI reduces the effort considerably compared with a traditional rebuild. How large the saving is in a given case is set out per application. The exact price depends on the scope of your database. You will receive a reliable estimate in a free initial consultation.
